Frances Guerin completed her PhD in Cinema Studies at NYU in 2000, following an MA in Art History at University of Melbourne, in Australia. She currently teaches at University of Kent, Canterbury. She is the author of A Culture of Light: Cinema and Technology in 1920s Germany (University of Minnesota Press, 2005); Through Amateur Eyes: Cinema and Photography in Nazi Germany, University of Minnesota Press, 2011. She is co-editor of The Image and the Witness: Trauma, Memory and Visual Culture (Wallflower Press, 2007). Her articles have appeared in international journals, including Cinema Journal, Screening the Past, Film and History, and Cinema e Cie. She has also written a book on grey painting, The Truth is Always Grey: from Grisaille to Gerhard Richter which is forthcoming. Her work in progress includes Industrial Views: Mining Manufacturing Art and Identity in the Ruhr Valley, and she is concurrently writing her first novel.
