Elias Wessel’s »Textfetzen« confront us with our everyday consumptions, which are fed by the inexhaustible newsfeed of social media platforms. His »Textfetzen« immobilize the newsfeed, inviting us to linger and sink into it, to draw associative lines between the scraps. Wessel transfers the newsfeed into other, classic media formats: As a color photograph, as an audio file, and as text in book form, they make their way back from the digital to the analog. Fixed, limited and authorized by the artist. In addition to this gain in knowledge, it may be seen as a debunking of the promise that search engines and social networks would create a better world and better understanding between people.

Elias Wessels »Textfetzen« konfrontieren uns mit unseren alltäglichen Konsumptionen, die sich aus dem unerschöpflichen Newsfeed der Social Media Plattformen speisen. Seine »Textfetzen« hingegen stellen den Newsfeed still, laden zum Verweilen und Versenken ein, um zwischen den Fetzen assoziativ Linien zu ziehen. Wessel überträgt den Newsfeed in andere, klassische Medienformate: Als Farbfotografie, als Audio-Datei und als Text in Buchform gehen sie den Weg zurück vom Digitalen ins Analoge. Fixiert, begrenzt und autorisiert vom Künstler. Man mag darin neben dieses Erkenntnisgewinns auch eine Entlarvung jenes Versprechens sehen, mit Suchmaschinen und sozialen Netzwerken eine bessere Welt und eine bessere Verständigung zwischen den Menschen zu schaffen.
Christoph Neuberger is a full professor of media and communication science with a focus on digitalization and participation at Freie Universität Berlin and Managing Director of the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, Berlin. Previously, he taught as a professor at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. He also was a visiting professor at the University of Leipzig. He completed his studies, doctorate and habilitation at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. He is a regular member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the German Academy of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on the digital transformation of media, the public sphere and journalism.

Christoph Neuberger ist Professor für Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft mit dem Schwerpunkt »Digitalisierung und Partizipation« an der Freien Universität Berlin und Geschäfts- führender Direktor des Weizenbaum-Instituts für die vernetzte Gesellschaft, Berlin. Zuvor lehrte er als Professor an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München und der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Außerdem vertrat er eine Professur an der Universität Leipzig. Studium, Promotion und Habilitation an der Katholischen Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. Er ist ordentliches Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Deutschen Akademie der Technikwissenschaften. Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt ist der digitale Wandel von Medien, Öffent- lichkeit und Journalismus.
Axel Gelfert joined Technische Universität Berlin as a Professor of Theoretical Philosophy in 2017; prior to coming to Berlin, he spent eleven years teaching at the National University of Singapore as a tenured Assistant/Associate Professor. His research revolves around the interface between social epistemology and the philosophy of science and technology; he regularly revisits philosophical issues in connection with his prior training as a Theoretical Physicist. He is the author of two monographs (A Critical Introduction to Testimony, 2014, and How to Do Science With Models: A Philosophical Primer, 2016) and has written numerous papers (among others, »Fake News: A Definition«, 2018).

Axel Gelfert ist seit 2017 Professor für Theoretische Philosophie an der Technischen Universität Berlin; zuvor lehrte er elf Jahre lang an der National University of Singapore, zuletzt als Associate Professor. Seine Forschung bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen sozialer Erkenntnistheorie und Wissenschafts- und Technikphilosophie; dabei kehrt er immer wieder zu Themen seiner früheren Tätigkeit als Theoretischer Physiker zurück. Er ist der Autor zweier Monografien (A Critical Introduction to Testimony, 2014, und How to Do Science With Models: A Philosophical Primer, 2016) sowie zahlreicher Veröffentlichungen (u. a. »Fake News:A Definition«, 2018).
Hans-Christian von Herrmann is head of the literary studies group at the TU Berlin. In research and teaching, he is dedicated to the change in literary culture in the age of cybernetization and digitization. On the one hand, this means an occupation with literature and other arts from the middle of the 20th century to the present day, on the other hand, the development of historical and theoretical perspectives that shed light on the relationship between art, technology and science across epochs and cultures. His work focuses in particular on the dispute between the ›two cultures‹ since the 18th century and its criticism, the relationship between art and automation since the early 20th century, and the effects of planetarization associated with modern technology. He is a member of the Berlin International Graduate School in Model and Simulation Based Research at the TU Berlin (BIMoS) and a member of the board of the Society of Friends of the TU Berlin.

Hans-Christian von Herrmann leitet das Fachgebiet Literaturwissenschaft mit dem Schwerpunkt Literatur und Wissenschaft an der TU Berlin. In Forschung und Lehre widmet er sich dem Wandel der literarischen Kultur im Zeitalter von Kybernetisierung und Digitalisierung. Dies meint einerseits eine Beschäftigung mit der Literatur und anderen Künsten seit der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts bis in die Gegenwart, andererseits die Erarbeitung historischer und theoretischer Perspektiven, die das Verhältnis von Kunst, Technik und Wissen- schaften epochen- und kulturübergreifend beleuchten. Besondere Schwerpunkte seiner Arbeit bilden der Streit der ›zwei Kulturen‹ seit dem 18. Jahrhundert und seine Kritik, das Verhältnis von Kunst und Automatisierung seit dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert sowie die mit der modernen Technik verbundenen Effekte der Planetarisierung. Er ist Mitglied im Vorstand der Gesellschaft von Freunden der TU Berlin, außerdem ist er Mitglied im Verein Literarisches Colloquium Berlin sowie im Wissenschaftlichen Beirat des Leibniz-Zentrums für Literatur- und Kulturforschung.
